Dust devils are a strong, well-formed, and relatively short-lived whirlwind which form when a pocket of hot air near the earth surface rises quickly through cooler air above it, forming an updraft.

According to experts, they are usually harmless, but can on rare occasions grow strong enough to endanger both people and property.
