The annual Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service dip attracts scores of hardy people - with this year’s event coming amidst a cold health alert by The UK Health Security Agency.

Providing an update on the popular event, people have been told it is scheduled to go ahead with swimmers told to be in position for the dip which starts at midday at the Lifeboat Station. “Current weather and sea conditions look favourable for the event, although these are always subject to change,” a Facebook post said.

Those taking part must be able to swim, have been advised to wear a warm hat during the dip to help reduce heat loss and wear beach shoes or old trainers as the beach is stony. It is recommended people stay in the water for no more than three minutes and have warm, dry clothing to change into immediately afterwards.

The GAFIRS annex, located to the rear of the Lifeboat Station, will be available as a communal changing area, sheltered from the wind.

The post added: “Above all, we want everyone to start the New Year in a fun but, most importantly, safe way. Thank you for supporting your local independent Lifeboat Station – your participation and donations really do save lives.”
