Warning as further debris washes up on Hayling Island beach suspected to be from lost shipping containers

Havant Borough Council are warning beach-goers to stay away from debris after receiving more reports of insulation foam washing ashore.

The items are possibly from shipping containers that were lost off cargo ships near the Isle of Wight on January 8. Debris was first spotted on South Hayling beach a few days later with the council releasing a similar warning.

It has now received further reports of debris such as insulation foam on the beach at Hayling Island and it has reiterated its warning advising for children and pets to be kept away.

A Havant Borough Council spokesperson said: “Recently we have received reports of possible shipping container debris (such as insulation foam) washing up on the beach at South Hayling. The situation continues to be monitored, with regular patrols taking place and teams continuing to collect any debris that washes up so it can be safely removed.

“Whilst we appreciate everyone helping to keep our beaches clean, please do not touch or attempt to remove any debris, as contents may be unknown and potentially hazardous. Please also keep children and pets away from any debris.”

The council are asking anyone who spots suspected debris to note the location and call them on 023 9244 6019 ”so it can be dealt with safely”.

24 containers fell into the sea overnight on Thursday, January 8 as gusts hit 70mph during Storm Goretti. The containers fell from two separate cargo ships, one of which reported 17 falling near the Nab Tower at around 11.10pm, while seven more fell overboard from a vessel situated south of St Catherine’s Point at around midnight.
