Two women rescued from mud near Hilsea had been out kayaking, fire crew confirms

Two women who had to be rescued from mud in Hilsea last night were out kayaking when they got caught in the low tide, fire crews have confirmed.

Fire crews from Cosham and Southsea, coastguard teams and the ambulance service were alerted at about 8.30pm and spent two hours bringing the women back to dry land.

A Cosham Fire Station spokesman said they had been kayaking in the water but had become stuck in mud when the tide went out.

Coming from the Hilsea side, two crew members from the coastguard trudged more than 200m through thick mud and were able to winch back the pair on a dinghy.

The Hill Head coastguard team shared photos of the operation on Twitter, showing the two rescuers wading through the mud near to the motorway.

The two women were able to walk unaided once they back at the shore, and were checked over by paramedics.

No hospital treatment was required.

One onlooker told The News last night: ‘I’m really glad the emergency services have been able to get them out.

‘I hope they’re okay.’
