'Moments and memories' remembrance event launched as Purbrook's Rowans Hospice to honour those who died
The charity provides end-of-life care for people with debilitating conditions
A compassionate remembrance event has been organised by a Purbrook charity to honour those who died of debilitating conditions.
Rowans Hospice has launched its “moments and memories” appeal, which includes a commemoration event on June 14. The organisation offers free care to patients who are suffering from life-limiting illnesses in Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Hayling Island, and elsewhere.

Clinical lead Amy Russell said: “Our team will never forget one patient who married her partner here at the Hospice. Her wish was simple: to enjoy one last ice cream in the sunshine. On her wedding day, we arranged a surprise visit from an ice cream van and gently wheeled her bed down the corridor, her husband by her side.
“In that moment, surrounded by love and laughter, she was simply herself — enjoying ice cream with the person she loved.”
The organisation has been under major financial pressures in recent years, with redundancies having to be made. Ms Russell added: “Every day, we help create moments that matter — moments of comfort, togetherness, laughter, and love. Moments that families will carry with them forever. But we cannot do it without your support.
“We rely on the generosity of our community to raise 78 per cent of our income, ensuring our services remain free of charge for those who need us most.”
The summer remembrance event offers a space for people to come together to honour those they have lost, share stories, and reflect on the moments that shaped their lives. It takes place at the Holywell Estate in Swanmore, starting at 2:00pm. Tickets are free for those supporting the appeal, with free on-site parking.
People who donate £30 or more will have their dedication included in the Order of Service booklet for the event, and will receive a forget-me-not flower ornament, hand-crafted at Morrell’s Forge.
Ms Russell said: “Whether you are able to join us for our event in June or support us from afar, your kindness and generosity allow us to be there for every family who needs us. Please consider making a dedication in memory of a loved one.”
