Purbrook woman who lost 5 stone through Slimming World 'amazed' at weight loss health benefits
LOSING five stone has helped a Purbrook woman to reduce medication, walk further and begin to feel more confident in herself.
Shedding unwanted weight has had a host of health benefits for Karon Tuffs, who joined Slimming World last September and has since stopped needing tablets for blood pressure and noticed improvements in her osteoarthritis.
Originally joining the Purbrook group to support a friend, Karon soon found she was enjoying the meals and the support from group members and consultant Mel Knibbs.
The 58-year-old said: ‘I walked in and Mel was so lovely, you have got a lot of support there in the group to help you. I don’t think I have ever felt so supported, they never make you feel bad if you make a mistake.

‘When you have been big for so long, it takes a while for the mind to catch up. I have always had a weight problem since I had my first child - for a good 30 years I have been overweight and just got bigger.’
Karon, who has gone from a size 22 to a 14, said she is eating more fruit than ever and even kept up with the plan over the Christmas period, which tends to be a time for indulging for most.
She said: ‘I was so focused about it because it was working and I didn’t want to let it go. I’m amazed at the health benefits and just so glad that I have done it for that alone.
‘You have got to wake up sooner or later when you’re getting older. It’s either going to get a lot worse or you can take control.’
Husband Mark is really happy for Karon, and has been keeping track of her awards and putting them up on display.
Consultant Mel said: ‘Karon is such a valued member of our Slimming World group at Purbrook and has achieved so much in the short time she has been a member with us.
‘Since September she has lost five stone and has fully embraced the generous food optimising plan.’
Mel’s groups have continued to run throughout lockdown, losing a combined weight of 41 stone. For more information, phone Mel on 07702 633420.
