“Rainbow Roars” created by Portsmouth Pride as it presents 100 special limited edition pin badges

A “rainbow roar” has been created thanks to a special limited edition pin badge by Portsmouth Pride to mark the 100th anniversary of the city.

With Portsmouth set to host a Lion Trial this summer as part of the Portsmouth100 celebrations, the charity launched 100 pin badges, reimagining the Lion Trail logo with an eight-stripe rainbow gifted to the first 100 donors in a campaign launched during LGBTQ+ History Month.

The first badge was claimed by Jane Lamer, head of economic development at Portsmouth City Council, with the 100th (and final) badge awarded to Dom Jones, CEO of the Mary Rose Trust - with the pair brought together for the presentation at the Mary Rose Museum.

Affectionately dubbed “Rainbow Roars”, the badges are also a playful nod to the city-wide celebrations, with Portsmouth Pride also set to have one of the Lions as part of the city-wide trail to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Portsmouth receiving city status.

Chair and campaigns lead at Portsmouth Pride Trust, CP Robinson, said: “What began as a light-hearted comment about “Pride in Portsmouth” being confused with Portsmouth Pride has come full circle.

“Designed by local LGBTQ+ artist Angela Chick, the lion will feature a vibrant rainbow patchwork made up of words and reflections from 100 local LGBTQ+ people, celebrating what makes Portsmouth special to them. The project is being delivered in partnership with Hampshire Flag Company and will be hosted at Gunwharf Quays, before continuing as part of Portsmouth Pride’s work across the year.

“In the meantime, LGBTQ+ community members are invited to take part by visiting the Portsmouth Pride stand at Love Southsea Market this Easter weekend, where they can meet the artist and contribute their own memories, stories, and messages to this city-wide celebration.”
