Pair in small dinghy rescued in Portsmouth Harbour after drifting into shipping lanes
“A tragedy would have almost certainly taken place.”
Emergency services were quick to respond after two people in a dinghy were spotted adrift in Portsmouth Harbour.
According to eyewitness reports, a pair of people in a dinghy - believed to possibly be children - could be seen drifting in the wind at around 4.30pm yesterday (Thursday, April 30).
The dinghy was drifting into the shipping lanes, one person said, and a yacht in the harbour had to turn around and get a line to the dinghy, to stop it from going any further. Less than 10 minutes later, police were on the scene to get the pair to safety.
An eyewitness told The News: “It was clear they were being driven by the wind. I immediately contacted emergency services.
“Should a ferry have come through the harbour entrance, it would have had no chance of seeing such a small dinghy, and a tragedy would have almost certainly taken place.”
