More than 20 firefighters battle blaze at Portsmouth launderette

Residents were forced to flee from their flats after a blaze at a Portsmouth laundrette last night.

More than 20 firefighters were called out to put out the fire which started at Smarty Pants in London Road, North End.

Crews from Southsea and Cosham were alerted shortly after 10pm and sent four fire engines, with a hose jet being used to extinguish the flames.

People living in the flats above the launderette were able to evacuate before the crews arrived.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue service spokesperson said the cause of the fire was believed to be an electrical fault.

No injuries were reported.
