No strangers to finishing bottom of the table after their humiliating relegation from the Premier League last season, Southampton were at it again as they were dumped in last place out of the 20 biggest cities in the UK.

The city was mocked as a “minor player” and slapped with a pitiful visitor appeal rating of 1/10 as it ranked behind the likes of Bradford, Leicester and Coventry.

Chris Moss, a destination expert who visited all 20 cities before delivering his brutal verdict, wrote: “It has the UK’s busiest cruise terminal, but in all other matters, Southampton is a minor player.

“Visitors must make do with moderately well-curated maritime heritage (SeaCity museum), satisfactory shopping (Westquay) and some OK green spaces (Queens Park, Southampton Common), but very limited cultural offerings.”

Liverpool was ranked in first place with Edinburgh second, while London came just seventh.

Portsmouth, with a slightly smaller population than Southampton, was not classed as one of the biggest 20 cities in Britain.
