Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green has been shut today over safety fears after a gas leak was located on Tuesday evening. It means pupils will get an extended summer holiday as a result.

Hampshire County Council, which has confirmed the closure on its website, said: “The school will be closed until at least Monday and further information will be sent as soon as we have any.”

However, headteacher Stuart Parkes suggested the school may open before Monday to some pupils. He said in a statement: “If repairs are completed today, Year 7 and 8 will return on Friday, and Years 9 to 11 will return on Monday.

“If repairs take longer, Year 7 and 8 will return on Monday, while Years 9 to 11 will return on Tuesday. We’ll share updates as soon as we have more information. Thank you for your understanding, and apologies for the disruption.”

Parents and carers will be updated via text and email.
