The motorist had a lucky escape as they attempted to plough across the surging stream at Moyles Court, near Ringwood in the New Forest.

The car was swept away despite only having its front wheels in the water as the driver attempted to reverse out of the hazardous stream.

Pictures show the vehicle submerged further along from the crossing as Storm Bram rips through Hampshire.

The incident has sparked Hampshire Police to issue a warning to motorists. A social media post said: “The ford at Moyles Court is currently shut, (as others will be). The driver only had their front tyres in and was in process of reversing as assessed as too dangerous, however the power of the water took the vehicle in deeper with the driver sensibly leaving the vehicle and putting life before property.”

Issuing a warning to drivers across Hampshire, the post added: “With some very challenging road conditions and inclement weather courtesy of Storm Bram please take extra care on our roads.

“With fallen trees, hidden hazards in standing as well as swollen fast flowing streams making fords a threat to life. Even a foot of water is enough to float a car with currents strong enough to take vehicles downstream, putting occupants at danger.

“If a road is coned off please don't move the cones and respect the closure even if you own a 4x4 , don't put yourself at risk. Hampshire Highways are busy putting in hard closures so be prepared for delays and leave extra time for your journey.”
