It is common for dogs to become unwell if they are exposed to the heat for too long – but there are some things you can do to prevent this from happening.
One of the main tests that owners can do is check how hot the floor is. If you cannot comfortably hold your hand on the pavement for between three and five seconds, then a dog should not be walking on it.
Here are some more tips to keep your dogs happy in the summer:

5. Keeping dogs cool
You can keep dogs cool in a variety of ways. You could set up a small paddling pool with cool water for your dog to play in, or you could lay a wet towel on the floor for your dog to lay on - do not put the towel over them as it could retain heat and make them hotter. Another way to keep them cool is by putting ice cubes into the dogs water. Photo: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

6. Dog treats
Frozen treats and water ice lollies will go down a treat with you pooch during the summer months. It is also a good idea to put pet approved sun cream on dogs that do not have a lot of thick hair to prevent them being burnt. Photo: FRANK RUMPENHORST/DPA/AFP via Getty Images

7. Vets
The RSPCA is also advising people to be aware of Flystrike which is a painful condition where flies lay their eggs on another animal. The eggs hatch and the maggots eat the flesh of their hosts. Make sure that you keep your dog clean and that you do daily checks on them - if you suspect that your dog has this, take them to vet as soon as possible. Photo: Leon Neal/Getty Images

8. When to walk your dogs
Walk your dogs in the morning or the evening and avoid taking them out during the day if possible. Photo: Marc Serota/Getty Images
