Debbie decorates her bin to celebrate VE Day and recognise key workers
A WOMAN has been commemorating VE Day by decorating her wheelie bin in the cross of St George and dressing up as the patriotic symbol of Britannia.
Debbie Knight, 51, who works as a receptionist for Portsmouth Football Club, wanted to pay her own tribute to those who brought about the surrender of Nazi Germany as well as providing some ‘light hearted relief’ for refuse collectors who have continued to clear people’s waste during the coronavirus pandemic.

Debbie said: ‘It’s very important to remember the events of 75 years ago and sacrifices made. I decorated the bin with the cross of St George using pieces of tissue paper and I made the Britannia outfit using an old sheet.’
Dressed in her patriotic attire, Debbie waited for the arrival of the refuse collectors where she presented them with a box of beer.
‘It was just to say a little thanks to them for continuing to keep going with this vital service during lockdown. It is important we also remember all the key workers at this time,’ she commented.
The VE Day decoration was one a series of themes Debbie has been dressing her bin in during lockdown.
‘At Easter I decorated the bin as an Easter bunny and I have also covered it in a large photograph of myself. The refuse collectors seem to find it quite entertaining. It’s important to do these little things to keep people smiling during this difficult time,’ said Debbie.
