The mystery car - which had vanished by the time police attended the scene - was seen near junction 4 westbound around 5.30am.

Police attended and carried out a search for the danger driver who by this time had left the M27. There were no collisions or injuries as a result of the incident but drivers were less than impressed, with one writing on social media: “Just what you need.”

A police spokesperson said: “We were called at 5.39am to a report of a car travelling in the wrong direction on the M27 westbound, close to junction 4.

“Officers attended and conducted a search along the M27 between junctions 2 and 4, however the vehicle was not located on the carriageway. No collisions or injuries connected with this incident have been reported.”
