A27 closed in both directions in Chichester as workers battle to fix damaged gas pipe
ENGINEERS battling to fix a damaged gas pipe have closed a major highway in both directions tonight.
The A27 has been shut off by gas firm SGN along the Chichester Bypass.
Engineers are carrying out urgent repairs to a gas pipe which was damaged by a ‘third party’.
The stretch of the A27 between Oving Road and Bognor Road will remain shut tonight.

In a statement on the company’s website, a spokesman said: ‘We're continuing to carry out emergency repairs to our network along the A27 Chichester Bypass after our pipe was damaged earlier today by a third party.
‘The A27 remains closed in both directions between Oving Road and Bognor Road for everyone's safety while our engineers carry out the required repairs. A signed diversion is in place for affected motorists.
‘We'd advise motorists to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for your journeys overnight and during Tuesday morning's rush hour.
‘As always, we'd recommend that anyone who can smell gas contacts the National Gas Emergency Service number on 0800 111 999.
‘Our engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to repair our damaged pipe and we'll continue to provide updates here.’
