Parked cars cause trouble for fire service responding to two fires in Foxes Forest

Two fires including one in an underground bunker broke out last night

Parked cars caused trouble for crews last night as they raced to respond to two separate fires along a popular walking trail.

Firefighters from Fareham were called on Monday, August 10 at approximately 5.38pm to deal with a small fire in Foxes Forest, located in Scott Road, Hilsea. Crews used one beater and one hose reel jet to put out the fire, before leaving the scene at 6.30pm.

Two and a half hours later and crews from Bishops Waltham were called to tackle a small fire in an underground bunker in the same area of Scott Road. The fire was extinguished using two knapsacks and the crew left the scene at approximately just before 10pm.

Casemates Cafe and Studio, which sits nearby, took to social media last night saying: “Tonight, we’ve had two fire engines attending fires in Foxes Forest.

“With the current heat and extremely dry woodland, grass and foliage, fires can spread rapidly and can smoulder underground in the dry peat. Please do not light fires or BBQs in the Forest - the risk to wildlife, habitats, people and nearby properties is simply too great.

“Please keep the entrance to Bastion 4 clear. Our fire engines have struggled to turn around this evening because of parked vehicles. Emergency vehicles must have unrestricted access at all times.”
