Offer accepted for the sale of decommissioned Fratton Police Station after sitting on market for years

Update on vacant police station

An offer has been accepted for the sale of a decommissioned police station which has stood empty for several years.

Fratton Police Station, in Kingston Crescent, closed in 2020 after the previous Police Crime Commissioner (PCC), Michael Lane, approved plans to consolidate police services.

The four-storey building was vacated and marked as surplus property, with the current commissioner, Donna Jones, finalising the decision to sell the building in 2023.

The freehold site, which dates back to 1975, has been marketed by Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell since 2023.

Donna Jones told The News: “The building was closed and put up for sale by the previous Police and Crime Commissioner. Yesterday, (August 6) I accepted an offer on the site.

“My commitment, since taking over as Commissioner, has been to open new police stations and front counters, and not close any. I am committed to ensuring local people have a police station they can go in to, should the need arise.

"It’s why I’ve opened a new police station in Petersfield and reopened Park Gate police station and Portsmouth Central Police Station to the public in the last 24 months. This is part of a programme that has seen ten new police stations and front counters open, with another three planned for the next year including in Gosport.”

In recent months, the derelict building has attracted trespassers, with photographs taken inside the property being shared online.

Donna Jones added: “With regards to urban explorers, old buildings often attract this kind of attention. Trespassers continue to target the site and put themselves at risk. It’s extremely hazardous as the building is run down and contains asbestos.

“A number of measures have been put in place to prevent entry to the building and surrounding site. Anyone caught trespassing will be prosecuted.”

Details of the offer including the buyer and the price have not been disclosed.
