Motiv8: Portsmouth charity hacked as CEO explains next steps - has any personal data been leaked?
“Additional security measures are in place,” the charity’s CEO said.
A charity has been affected by a cyber security incident, the CEO has said.
Last week, Beacon - a customer relationship management system (CRM) - was breached by hackers, who were able to gain unauthorised access to the database. This platform is used by Motiv8, a charity that works with young people in Portsmouth and the surrounding area to grow in confidence and develop new skills.
According to the charity, copies of Beacon’s back-up database were made, although it is unknown if any data was actually downloaded.

In an email sent out to partners, Motiv8 CEO Kirsty Robertson said: “Motiv8 is notifying all our contacts directly and will continue to assess the situation and as necessary, will formally report the incident to the Information Commissioners Office (IOC), Fundraising Regulator, and the Charities Commission.
“Motiv8 has followed instructions to ensure that the additional security measures are in place within our Beacon account and that your data remains secure.
“It is important to note that Motiv8 only use Beacon to store basic information such as organisation details , names, and email addresses. We do not hold any personal, sensitive information or financial details such as bank details.”
As for Beacon itself, a forensic investigation is being carried out by cyber-security specialists, and the company is conducting continued online monitoring of the dark web, as is standard practice in these kinds of incidents. So far, there has been no reference or data linked to this incident.
