"We are over the moon": Jubilation as Hilsea Lido's opening date is announced after major multi-million pound renovation project
After two years of major regeneration work, the opening date of the iconic Hilsea Lido has been announced - and there isn’t long to wait.
The outdoor pool has been a key part of the north of the city for 90 years and after falling into a state of disrepair, an enormous regeneration project was launched to restore it to its former glory.
The £7.75m project, which has been paid for by the Levelling Up Fund, has been carried out by contractors Beard to establish a fully functioning pool, new changing rooms, benches, tables and a fountain.

Last July it was confirmed that Sea Lanes Brighton would be stepping up to the plate and taking on the newly improved site, in partnership with South Downs Leisure, with the team outlining plans for a new sauna and a timetable full of events and community activities.
Today (February 24), it has been confirmed that the Hilsea Lido will officially open its doors on May 2, 2026.
Judit Kollat, general manager at Hilsea Lido, said: “As Hilsea Lido celebrates its 90th birthday, we are proud to be leading the next chapter in its history. The work that Portsmouth City Council has done to refurbish Hilsea Lido has enabled us to regenerate it. It is more than a pool, it’s a place with history and heart. We aim to create a vibrant hub for the local community, a centre for both mental and physical wellbeing. The Lido will offer something for everyone.
“With just a couple of months to go until we open the doors on May 2 please do mark the date in your calendars.”

With less than three months until the launch, contractors have been working round the clock to get the pool ready, and most recently they have removed the protective tent covering the lido.
Now this step has been completed, the team will start adding the finishing touches to the pool before filling it up in due course.
Councillor Steve Pitt at Portsmouth City Council said: “We’re over the moon that Hilsea Lido will open its doors in just a couple of months.
“This milestone comes as Portsmouth proudly marks 100 years of city status, making 2026 a truly special year. The reopening of Hilsea Lido will transform the north of the city, following the successful launch of the KGV Football Complex and ahead of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme finishing this year.
“As a council, we’ve invested over £40 million in sport and leisure facilities, including the Mountbatten Centre, Pyramids, the new Bransbury Park leisure centre and the KGV Football Complex, because physical activity brings clear benefits for mental and physical wellbeing.
