Gosport renters' rights consultation launched as council outlines policies

Residents are invited to have their say on policies impacting renters’ rights

A public consultation has been launched on two new policies that will shape how landlords are held to account under strengthened renters' rights legislation in Gosport.

The government introduced the Renters' Rights Act 2025 in October giving local authorities greater powers to investigate landlords and take action over issues like unsafe living conditions, with responsibilities in force from May this year.

Gosport Borough Council is now seeking views on two new policies - Private Rented Sector Housing Enforcement Policy and Renters’ Rights Act Civil Penalty Policy.

The policies apply to the enforcement of housing standards in privately rented homes within the borough. They set out how the council will investigate complaints, protect private rented tenants, explain landlord responsibilities, and use enforcement action to improve housing standards.

Gosport Borough Council leader Cllr Zoe Huggins, said: "Everyone deserves to live in a safe, secure and well-maintained home. These new policies are designed to help the Council use new national powers to protect private renters, work with responsible landlords, and take action where standards aren't met.

"We welcome feedback so we can be sure the policies are clear, fair and effective."

Feedback is particularly welcome from private tenants, private landlords, letting and managing agents and residents and community organisations, with a consultation running until September 11. To submit our views on the new policies to protect private renters, click here.
