Cause of early morning fire on New Road that caused significant damage to two houses revealed

The fire tore through the gardens of two properties in Copnor

A fire at a terraced house on New Road, Copnor, which caused significant damage to two properties, is believed to have been started by the end of a cigarette.

Firefighters from Southsea, Hayling Island, Emsworth and Havant were called shortly after 5am on Tuesday to a fire at the property.

The fire affected the garden and kitchen of the home, and also spread to the garden and extension roof of a neighbouring property.

Firefighters used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire before returning to their stations shortly before 7am. They have now confirmed that they believe the blaze was caused by “discarded smoking materials”.

Gordon Miller, the owner of the neighbouring property that had damage to the bathroom, said: “It was lucky enough that nobody was hurt, everyone was asleep in their beds.”

“You could see the smoke from Baffins.”
