Transformation of Southsea continues with new-look promenade near South Parade Pier being created

The transformation of Southsea continues

Work is continuing to create a new-look promenade between South Parade Pier and Speakers’ Corner in Southsea, with almost a quarter of the large precast concrete blocks installed.

Out of a total of 349 units on this frontage, 75 of them have been installed with these units making up secondary defences, disguised as tiered planters and seating. It follows the previous work which has seen the shingle area of the beach increased in size which will reduce the power of the waves.

The Southsea Coastal Scheme team has also started to raise the levels of the promenade using recycled crushed concrete from the old promenade and crushed stone. This is often used on highways and it will create a solid base layer for when the promenade itself is created. When finished it will match the promenade area in front of Speakers’ Corner and further to the west in Southsea.

The area where the works are taking place will be closed until May 2027, but nearby businesses including South Parade Pier and The Briney remain open as usual.

The works are part of the overall measures to create new sea defences in Southsea, with previous phases from Old Curtain Moat to Speakers’ Corner already complete.
