Steady progress continues during works to create new sea defences next to Southsea's South Parade Pier
The new-look promenade is taking shape
It has been full steam ahead with the creation of a new-look promenade in a busy part of Southsea as the installation of the precast concrete units continues apace.
An average of six units are being installed each day during the good weather helping the Southsea Coastal Scheme team to reach its total of 349 units needed along the section from South Parade Pier to Speakers’ Corner.
The units will help to shape the new promenade the sea defences which are being created along the area which will match those already completed further along the coastline.

The promenade will be raised by about half a metre to improve protection from the sea, with ramps added so people can still get down to the beach. Stepped planting areas are also being created to manage the height difference between the promenade and the existing road.
The capping beam in front of the seating beside South Parade Pier is now complete and ducting pits are also being installed on site to provide the power cables for both the historic lighting columns and the lighting columns which will sit within the planting terrace units.
A new two‑way cycle lane will also be created along the road, which will be fully resurfaced.

The promenade between South Parade Pier and Speakers’ Corner will be closed until May 2027 while the works continue, though local businesses - including the pier - remain open.
