The beach adjacent to the promenade is being excavated so that the Southsea Coastal Scheme team can begin the installation of sheet piles and the placement of stepped access to the beach which will begin next week. When finished, it will look similar to the stepped access created in other parts of Southsea.
A piling platform is also being created with the excavated beach material, and then later on the machine that installs the piles will sit on this platform to carry out this work. This platform will be in place for around one month and will then be redistributed to form part of the beach again.
This latest phase follows the sea defence works last year where shingle was imported onto the beach in the area to double it in size.
The promenade area will be closed until May 2027, with diversions in place for pedestrians and cyclists. South Parade Pier remains open as normal throughout the works.
