Huge changes afoot at Southsea Beach with re-shingling work well underway as part of the new sea defences

Huge progress is being made already on works to re-shingle Southsea Beach next to South Parade Pier which will see it double in size.

The trailing suction hopper dredger Gateway has powered through pumping shingle to the west side of South Parade Pier and has now started on the eastern side as part of the works by the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

Shingle is being pumped onto the beach, while teams on land put it into position - with the results next to the pier already clear to see.

These works are taking place around the clock, with the Gateway discharging approximately twice per day until mid-December, resulting in over a million tonnes of shingle being placed onto Southsea’s Beach between The Pyramids and the Coffee Cup at Eastney,

This will form the primary flood defence along that section of the beach.
