Portsmouth's first recycling centre for dental products opens

THE city’s first recycling centre for toothbrushes and other dental products has opened.

Run by the University of Portsmouth’s Dental Academy, the programme has been set up as part of the site’s Revolution Plastics project. All dental care products and packaging disposed of in special bins on site will be sorted and separated, and then cleaned, shredded, and made into new recycled products.

Dr Carolina Machuca Vargas, a senior lecturer in dental public health at the university, said: ‘We hope that this initiative will motivate our community to drive forward other recycling programmes in the future. It’s great to see colleagues taking the initiative to reduce our environmental impact as part of our commitment to becoming a climate positive university by 2030.’

The recycling bins are in the waiting room of the Dental Academy, in Hampshire Terrace, which is open to everyone on weekdays from 8.30am to 5pm.
