Two huge temporary footbridges in Hilsea will be dismantled in the new year as Ports Creek sea defence works continue

Two temporary footbridges which were created for the ongoing sea defence works in Hilsea will be dismantled in the new year, it has been confirmed.

The scaffold temporary bridge in Peronne Road will be closed for dismantling from Monday, January 19 2026, with the work taking up to three weeks. Diversions will be in place, with the normal Peronne Road footbridge inaccessible during this time.

Once the structure is removed the permanent footbridge over the M27 will remain open for the remainder of the work with a manned level crossing which will be closed for a few minutes at a time should any site traffic need to cross it.

Meanwhile, the temporary bridge near London Road at the Portsbridge roundabout car park will be closed for dismantling from March 9 2026. The footpath along the car park will be reopened at this time, offering a shorter route, though occasional temporary closures may still be required for slipway work in the new year.

The news comes as the sea defences team take a break over the festive period after making great strides on the project which sees a new raised embankment being created as well as new footpaths and improved pedestrian access.

Work will resume again on January 5.
