"Ditch the crocs" visitors told as viral Highland cows are moved on Butser Hill and the public is asked not to get too close

Visitors to Butser Hill have been urged to ditch their crocs in the wake of the area’s Highland cows in a viral social media trend, which led to three being having to be rescued by the emergency services.

Queen Elizabeth Country Park has said that it has now moved the “much loved Highland cattle” to the Middle Valley on the eastern side of the hill after completing their latest round of conservation grazing. This means they will now be visible from the A3 side.

QECP has also moved to assure visitors that they do not need to rush up to the hill to see the cows as they will continue to be there for the next few months and that they are regular visitors to the hill.

It said: “Following the recent social media attention, we’d like to reassure everyone that there’s no need to rush to Butser Hill to see them as they will be continuing their grazing job for a couple more months before moving to Manor Farm to calf. Highland cattle can be found at several countryside sites across Hampshire throughout the year.

“These cattle are here to do an important job of conservation grazing which helps manage scrub, protect the rare chalk grassland, and boost biodiversity on this sensitive site.”

It added : “The ground is very wet and slippery at the moment therefore sensible, sturdy footwear is essential. Unfortunately, crocs and trainers won’t cut it on these slopes! The best place to park is at Queen Elizabeth Country Park Visitor Centre and take the short walk to Butser Hill.

“You can then warm up with a warm drink from the cafe afterwards! Thank you for helping us look after Hampshire’s landscapes and the animals that care for them.”
