Giant pipes installed at Southsea as vital sea defence works continues - in pictures

Giant pipes are being installed in Southsea as part of vital sea defence works which will see the beach area vastly increased.

Around 60m of new pipeline is being installed to extend it out to sea, just east of South Parade Pier, to ensure it is not buried beneath the new shingle shoreline when the beach area is extended.

Throughout the week, passers by have been able to see the pipeline and the ‘collars’ which hold them in place as the Southsea Coastal Scheme team continue the works to install them before that area of the beach is re-shingled which will double the useable area in size. The work on the outfall pipe is estimated to be complete by the end of the week.

As previously reported by The News, Southsea’s beach between the Pyramids and the Coffee Cup café in Eastney is being rebuilt over this winter with more than one million tonnes of shingle imported by dredger between October 2025 and March 2026.

As a result access to the beach in some areas is restricted, though the promenade remains open.
