Motorists have been warned to ‘avoid the area’ if possible
A major motorway has reopened following a four-car crash and resulting vehicle fires this morning (May 7).
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the southbound route of the A3(M) in Waterlooville. The route was shut for at least two hours this morning while firefighters and officers carried out their duties.
A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) spokesperson said: “Two vehicles caught fire following the collision, but firefighters have successfully extinguished the fires using hose reels and jets.
“Firefighters are currently working to make the scene safe, while police officers carry out traffic management. Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible and expect delays.
“Fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries. Firefighters from Cosham and Havant are currently on scene dealing with the incident.”
A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson added that a report was made to the police at 7.44am, with officers subsequently deployed. Severe delays of up to 47 minutes were reported by the AA, with a detour signposted to drivers. Traffic backed up through Waterlooville to Horndean. Significant tailbacks were also reported in Purbrook.
