LIVE: Major emergency services response after chemical spill closes a busy city road

A chemical spill led to the closure of a busy Portsmouth road this afternoon with a large number of emergency services in attendance.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from Cosham, Southsea and Portchester were called at around half one this afternoon, and were supported by specialist hazmat teams from Winchester and Romsey.

“Paramedics treated a number of casualties who reported mild inhalation of chemical fumes, whilst local residents were advised to close windows and doors. Police officers were on the scene to close Gladys Avenue as firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, worked to investigate and contain the spillage.

“After testing the area with gas monitoring equipment, the incident was handed back to onsite staff and the safety cordons withdrawn.”

The fire service have confirmed that the area has now been made safe with crews leaving at 3.30pm this afternoon.
