Emergency crews from the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) rushed to the scene at 10.10am this morning. Both vessels were damaged in the encounter, with the bright sun and hot weather believed to be a factor.
The crew aboard the Joan Dora Fuller boat donned their kit in the scorching heat and headed out on the water. A social media statement from GAFIRS said: “Welfare checks were carried out on both crews and, fortunately, no injuries had been sustained.
“The motor boat had suffered more significant damage, while the yacht sustained only minor damage. Neither vessel was taking on water. Sun glare was believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision, serving as an important reminder to all water users to take extra care and always take a second look before manoeuvring, particularly in bright conditions. Following the exchange of insurance details, the crew were stood down.”
GAFIRS praised the crew for responding to the incident amid “extremely high” temperatures. A record temperature of 36.1C was recorded in Gosport yesterday. “Working in dry suits and rescue equipment on such a hot day is far from comfortable yet they carried out their tasking skilfully, professionally, and without hesitation,” GAFIRS added.
“As always, we thank our dedicated volunteers for their commitment to keeping people safe on the water. Thanks to Coastguard and Coastguard Rescue teams.”
