Battery explosion sees fire crews rush to Portsmouth address
A battery explosion at an address in Portsmouth saw fire crews rush to the scene with one person requiring medical attention.
The explosion took place at an address in Twyford Avenue just before 9pm on Monday, January 19. A lithium-ion battery used to charge a portable electric light was the cause of the blast with a part of the device fired into a wall in the next room.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue service spokesperson said: “Southsea crews were alerted to the property on Twyford Avenue, shortly before 9pm.
“The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived on scene, with the battery, which was used to charge a portable electric light, removed to the garden and submerged in water. Firefighters treated one casualty before passing them into the care of South Central Ambulance Service paramedics.
“A home fire safety check of the property was conducted before firefighters returned to station at around half nine.”

The incident has prompted Hampshire Fire and Rescue to issue a warning with fires caused by lithium-ion batteries increasing. It has called on people to stay safe by ensuring they choose “trusted” electronic products, handle them correctly and “dispose of them responsibly”.
It has issued the below tips:
- Buy batteries and devices from reputable brands

- If a battery starts smoking or catches fire, move away immediately and call 999
