Car "destroyed" on A27 in Portsmouth with westbound route temporarily closed due to vehicle fire

A car was “destroyed” in a fire on a major dual carriageway over the weekend.

Emergency service rushed to the A27 westbound in Portsmouth following a vehicle blaze on Sunday afternoon (November 9). The westbound route was closed while firefighters and other personnel work at the scene.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) spokesperson said crews from Cosham were deployed between Eastern Road and the Portsbridge roundabout at roughly 1pm.

“Firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the flames, which destroyed the vehicle, using hose reel jets,” they added. “The incident was handed over to police officers and the Highways Agency to arrange recovery. HIWFRS left the scene and returned to station at around 1.30pm.”

The spokesperson said no injuries were reported at the scene, with medics from South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) being stood down. Motorists faced “severe delays” of 32 minutes.

Vehicles were backed up to the A3(M) during the closure. The A27 was reopened later that afternoon, after the wreckage and spilt fuel was cleared.
