Rallying cry for volunteers to support Portsmouth Poppy Appeal ahead of Remembrance Sunday
Hundreds of volunteers are needed to support the cause every year
Dedicated volunteers are being sought to support the Poppy Appeal in Portsmouth.
The Royal British Legion (RBL) has issued a callout to people wishing to help their fundraising efforts in the city and surrounding area. Vital funds will once again be raised to support veterans, serving military personnel, and other members of the armed forces community.

Claire Smith. the Poppy Appeal manager for the RBL in South Hampshire, said: “We would encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering for the Poppy Appeal to get in touch with us to find out more. If you are looking for a more active part in the appeal, we would love to have you as a poppy appeal organiser.
“This role is crucial to delivering the Appeal and organising a team of dedicated volunteers. You will be fully supported in the role, including training before the Poppy Appeal. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, support your community and build your skills.”
The charity relies on more than 3,500 dedicated volunteers to help deliver the appeal every year. Portsmouth residents turned out in their droves to support the launch of last year’s campaign at the Spinnaker Tower. Serving Royal Marines handed out the first boxes of poppies amid a flurry of donations.

Musicians from the Royal Marines Band Service marched through Gunwharf Quays to rounds of applause from the crowd, which was followed by renditions of military music and a minute’s silence.
The RBL’s Poppy Appeal is the charity’s largest fundraising campaign and takes place every year in the run up to Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. The money raised makes a vital difference to people in the Armed Forces community, providing expert advice and practical support, whatever the need, whenever it’s needed.
The RBL can support with housing, debt and money advice, employment and physical and mental health. Anyone who wants to volunteer can contact the charity on the dedicated helpline 0345 845 1945, or online via the organisation’s website.
