Volunteer Cadet Corps feels the love on Valentine's Day as it marks 120 years

LOVE of a different kind was in the air as young military cadets celebrated the birthday of one of the area's oldest youth groups on Valentine’s Day.

Youngsters from across the Volunteer Cadet Corps (VCC) rallied to mark the organisation’s 120th anniversary today.

The naval group, which is headquartered in Gosport, has seen thousands of children join its ranks during its history.

The VCC was ‘stood up’ with one unit at what was then the Royal Marines Artillery barracks at Eastney with the first night on February 14.

Since then, it has weathered two world wars and most recently the coronavirus outbreak, with drill nights staged virtually.

VCC boss Lieutenant Colonel Christ Spatt, said: ‘We may not be able to celebrate properly just yet, but we will still mark our 120th anniversary and give thanks to the cadets and volunteers who have contributed to our amazing history.
