Remembrance Sunday: 65 pictures of emotional commemorations as Portsmouth honours the fallen

The city of Portsmouth held its breath as it honoured those who went to war and never returned to their loved ones.

Military personnel and civilians gathered for Remembrance Sunday services today. This started at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial in Southsea, with wreaths being laid to pay homage to the roughly 25,000 British Commonwealth sailors who died in the First World War and Second World War.

Eyes then looked on Guildhall Square, where residents had already packed the area by the time personnel marched there. After aligning in formation, the musicians in the Royal Marines Band Service greeted marching veterans who lined up in front of the steps. They were joined by cadets and scouts.

The Very Reverend Dr Anthony Cane, Dean of the Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral, lead the service. An excerpt of remembrance poem For The Fallen was read aloud, with Buglers sounding The Last Post. The two minutes’ silence was impeccably adhered to, followed by The Reveille. The Lord’s Prayer - alongside other prayers and hymns - were performed before The National Anthem.

Veterans and dignitaries proceeded to march to The Cenotaph to lay the ceremonial wreaths. A march past was then followed, with crowds waving and cheering as the parade drew to a close. Here are 65 pictures from the service. A full report of proceedings can be found here.
