"Major expansion" as Fareham manufacturer opens new drone factory bringing dozens of "high-quality" jobs

“High-quality” jobs have been brought to the Fareham area after the opening of a new drone factory.

Civil and defence drone manufacturer Windracers launched its larger facility in Hamble Valley on Monday (September 1). The 22,000 sq m location will be used to produce dual-use heavy-lift drones for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and customer abroad.

The expansion has created more than 50 skilled jobs, with further roles expected to be offered later this year. Chief executive officer Simon Muderack said: “This expansion is a major step for Windracers.

“It gives us the space and capability to scale up production of ULTRA aircraft, creating skilled jobs here in Hampshire and meeting demand from customers in the UK and overseas. We are proud to be building world-leading technology in Fareham and to play a part in strengthening the UK’s aviation industry, and we are grateful for the support of the local community as we grow.”

What do these drones do?

Windracers works with Ukraine across its military and support arms, while also supporting the British Antarctic Association with research in the polar region. The company’s machinery is used to deliver cargo to difficult environments.

The aircraft can take off and land from small airfields in difficult weather conditions - suited for serving remote locations. To date, Windracers has delivered several dozen aircraft to civil and defence customers.

It’s hoped that this expansion will more than double its production by the end of the year, allowing the company to deliver hundreds of drones over the next two years. Monday’s opening ceremony saw local and regional leader, and industry partners, coming together to celebrate the expansion.

Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Louise Clubley, said: “It is fantastic to see a business like Windracers investing in Fareham. This new factory brings high-quality jobs to the area and puts our borough at the heart of an exciting and fast-growing industry. I was delighted to meet the team and see first-hand the skills and innovation that are being developed right here in our community.”
