Two men have died and two women suffered burns during a small boat crossing in the English Channel.
A man in his 30s and another in his 40s died during the incident after departing from Berck on the French coast overnight.
French authorities said the women suffered burns over a large part of their bodies and were taken to hospital for treatment.
A spokesman for the local authority, the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, said: "An investigation has been opened by the Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor’s office to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
"François-Xavier Lauch, Prefect of Pas-de-Calais, thanks all the services involved, particularly the firefighters, for their intervention and commitment during this operation."
