The move followed information from police informants that some unscrupulous dealers were mixing heroin into the softer drug amphetamine.

Young teenagers were reportedly repeatedly returning to the rogue dealers without realising they had been made into heroin addicts.

The new phone line would be used to put callers in touch with people trained to help with a wide range of drug-related problems.

Anyone worried about drugs could ring the line for advice.

Detectives hoped the information given on the confidential telephone line would help them tackle the organised crime behind the supply of drugs at Gosport.
