Second arrest after former care home was burnt down

A woman has been arrested as part of an arson investigation after a derelict care home was burnt to the ground.

A 19-year-old woman from Hayling Island has been arrested on suspicion of arson following the fire at the former Heathmount site on London Road in Rake near Liss on Tuesday night (August 18).

Hampshire Police have confirmed she has now been bailed with conditions until November 21 while officers conduct further enquiries.

It is understood that cordons will remain in place around the former care home site due to concerns about the structural stability of the gutted building off the B2070.

Firefighters were called to the derelict building just after 11.30pm on Tuesday evening with fire crews from multiple stations around Hampshire battling the blaze until late the next day, including firefighters from the Portsmouth area.

A statement from Hampshire Police added: “The road was closed for a lengthy period of time while emergency services dealt with the incident.

“No one was reported injured as a result of the fire.

“The investigation continues.”
