Police have issued an update over an incident that led to a man falling from a bridge on the A27 on Saturday evening as traffic was held for more than two hours.

Police attended the “concern for welfare” incident around 5.30pm when the man was on a structure above the A27 at Hilsea before falling on the motorway below and suffering serious injuries, as reported.

Moments earlier, a crash on Eastern Road saw the male run from the scene before entering the A27. AA Traffic News and National Highways reported a “multi-vehicle collision”. Amid speculation, police have now said there was no pursuit from officers prior to the crash.

The horrifying incident led to traffic being held with people reporting delays of over two hours while police deployed “life-saving measures” when attempting to deal with the man at height. Motorists were seen getting out of their cars as events unfolded while an air ambulance was spotted flying over the motorway before landing.

Today, police have declined to reveal the latest condition of the man who was rushed to hospital with “serious injuries”. The force said no one had been arrested.

A police spokesperson previously said: “Officers were dealing with a concern for welfare incident on the bridge over the A27 at Hilsea from around 5.30pm on Saturday (26 September). Officers attended and took life-saving measures.

“The man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. A road closure was put in place to enable us to deal with this incident but it has since re-opened.

“Prior to officers attending, there was a related collision on Eastern Road in which a man ran from the scene of the collision. No injuries were reported in the collision.”

The spokesperson added: “As in all cases where police are present when a serious injury occurs a referral had been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
