Police take out driver's tyres to end high-speed chase that started in Fareham

A police chase that reached peaks of 100mph came to a dramatic end when officers took out the driver’s tyres.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s roads policing unit has reported an arrest following a car chase that began in Fareham, up to Winchester and back down to Chandler’s Ford.

Posting about the incident on Facebook, officers described how the vehicle had been spotted driving erratically, before flooring it on a motorway shortly after.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers were alerted to a vehicle in the Park Gate area, reported as being driven ‘all over the road’. The car was later located in the West End area, where it failed to stop for officers and was temporarily lost.

“The vehicle was then sighted again a short time later near Winchester and once more made off from police. Speeds reached over 100mph on the M3 motorway and as luck would have it, our friendly flying colleagues from NPAS were in the area and quickly provided overhead support and live commentary.

“With their assistance, officers were able to anticipate the vehicle’s route and a well‑executed stop stick deployment successfully took out two tyres, helping to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion in Chandlers Ford.”

The driver, a 53-year-old man from Eastleigh, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. At the time of publication, he is still in police custody.
