Southsea and Cosham fire crews extinguished the blaze on the roof of a two-storey building at Cumberland Infant School, as reported.

Firefighters were called to the school on Methuen Road at around 6pm after flames were seen on the rooftop. “Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters tackled the fire with jets and hose reels,” a fire service spokesperson previously said.

Prior to leaving the scene at around 8.30pm, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary were informed as it was believed to have been set deliberately.

A police spokesperson, confirming they are investigating, said: “We were called just after 7pm on Monday (22 December) by colleagues from the fire service, to reports of a fire at Cumberland Infant School. Nobody was injured.

“This incident is currently being treated as arson and an investigation into the circumstances is underway. No arrests have been made at the current time.”

The building was blocked off with fencing and had scaffolding erected around it. It is understood the roof had only recently been installed at the school.
