Police close Kings Road in Southsea

POLICE are remaining tight-lipped over why a major Southsea road has been closed tonight.

Officers at the scene in Kings Road, which is shut between St Paul’s Road and Norfolk Road, said they could not reveal why the road had been closed.

People in the area told The News they had heard that it was because of a hit-and-run incident.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘The police haven’t said anything to me yet.

‘I saw flashing lights from outside my window and came out to see what was going on.’

Police arrived at about 7.30pm today, with roughly half a dozen police vehicles on the scene.

The road is closed to cars in both directions, and pedestrians are being directed through Yorke Street.

A biker who was passing through, and lives nearby, said: ‘It’s sad but it doesn’t surprise me that something like this has happened.

‘We get crime all the time around here – the block I live in has been broken into six times in the past month.

‘It looks like somebody could have been seriously hurt and if that’s the case then I just hope they recover.’

Another resident said: ‘I was looking out of my window and could see more and more police arriving.

‘This has to be something very big, it must be serious for this many officers to come out and for the road to be closed.’

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for information.
