Police appeal after bricks thrown from A27 bridge could have 'easily' killed someone

VANDALS who launched a ‘hail of bricks’ from a footbridge over the A27, hitting three lorries and a car, could have ‘easily' killed someone, police have said.

Hampshire police are appealing for information into the incident, which happened at a bridge linking Cosham and Hilsea on Monday.

Three lorries below had to make emergency stops after the projectiles rained from the so-called Highbury footbridge at about 6.40pm.

The westbound-travelling vehicles suffered smashed windscreens and a car was also damaged.

PC Lisa Oliver said: ‘Throwing any items over a bridge onto a busy road is incredibly dangerous and it is extremely lucky that no one was seriously hurt.

‘Fortunately the drivers of these vehicles were able to stop safely, despite the significant damage caused to their windscreens, which obstructed their vision of the road ahead.

‘This could have easily caused a fatal collision and we are keen to speak to anyone who might have seen what happened or know those who were responsible for throwing the items from the bridge.'
