Aidan Gough, 28, of no fixed address, was arrested by the Southsea Neighbourhood Policing Team who were on shoplifting patrols in hotspot areas. Officers were alerted to reports of a shoplifting at Tesco Express on Elm Grove on Wednesday 9 September when Gough was arrested.

“They responded and pursued the man, but he resisted arrest and reportedly assaulted an officer in the process,” police said. “Additional officers arrived on scene to assist, and the man reportedly continued to violently resist arrest and assaulted a second officer.

“Following his subsequent arrest, whilst on the way to custody, the man is reported to have exposed himself and urinated in the police vehicle, doing so again after exiting the vehicle when they reached the station.”

Whilst in custody, Gough was also reported to have caused criminal damage to a holding cell.

He has now been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker, theft from a shop, two counts of exposure, two counts of criminal damage to property under £5,000, assaulting a designated / accredited person / inspector, and failing to comply with notification requirements for the sex offenders register.

He appeared yesterday (Thursday 10 September) at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court, where he has been bailed to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court for trial in due course.
