Exclusive:Machete-wielding man arrested by armed police in Southsea has now been jailed

Armed police arrested the man in Nelson Road, Southsea, earlier this year.

An “aggressive” man who wielded a machete along a side street in Southsea has been thrown behind bars.

Earlier this year, police were called to Nelson Road on the evening of Sunday, April 19, following reports of a man who “may have a weapon”. Armed response teams surrounded a property at 11.10pm that night, wearing tactical gear and carrying assault rifles.

Those officers were overheard ordering a man to “come out with your hands up” and arrested 53-year-old Paul Jennings.

Jennings, who lives in Nelson Road, was charged with two counts of criminal damage, one count of possessing a knife in a public place, one count of using threatening words or behaviour, and one count of affray.

At the time, a police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 11.10pm on Sunday (19 April) to a report of a man behaving aggressively at the junction of Albany Road and Nelson Road in Southsea. It was also reported that he may have a weapon.

“Officers attended and located 53-year-old Paul Jennings of Nelson Road in Southsea, who was arrested and charged with a number of offences.”

In May, he pleaded guilty to these offences at Portsmouth Crown Court, and after being remanded in custody, returned to court this morning (Friday, June 26) for sentencing.

As well as his machete being forfeited and destroyed, Jennings was sentenced to eight months in prison, concurrent for all offences. He must also pay a surcharge to the court.
