'Large crowd' of students surround and 'intimidate' travellers on Sarisbury Green school grounds

A large crowd of students surrounded a group of travellers who pitched up by their school grounds, resulting in an access gate being closed.

Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green shut the gate leading from its 3G pitch to Holly Hill Leisure Centre following the “intimidating” incident.

Police were called as student tensions bubbled over towards the travellers who arrived at the site on Sunday April 26.

Headteacher Stuart Parkes said in a letter to parents on Monday: "Following an incident on the Holly Hill Leisure Centre field, we have decided to close the gate that leads from our 3G pitch to Holly Hill until further notice.

"We have been informed by the police that they were called to a large crowd of our students surrounding the traveller site currently located on the field.

"The police reported unacceptable and at times intimidating behaviour from some students in this group.”

Mr Parkes went on to tell parents that their children should avoid the traveller camp before adding: “There is a significant safety concern for both students and travellers if this occurs."

Travellers left the site just after midnight on Tuesday, police have now confirmed.
